Birmingham City boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed that he would consider moving for Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick.
Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is a player that he would consider trying to bring to Birmingham City this summer provided that the price was right, the Birmingham Mail reports.
The Daily Mail reported in July that Elphick was a player that Redknapp was looking to bring to St Andrew’s in the very near future, and while a move has so far failed to materialise, it appears that Villa would be willing to cash-in on the centre-back this summer.
The Mail reports that Steve Bruce would consider selling the 29-year-old one year after his £3 million arrival from Bournemouth. And while the Blues boss confirmed that he would be keen to bring the defender to St Andrew’s, he added that the terms would have to be right.
“I like Tommy and I followed Tommy’s career at Bournemouth. He was the captain at Bournemouth, he was a leader, he was a fantastic character for Bournemouth in their rise through the divisions,” he said, as reported by the Mail.
“He was an outstanding player for Bournemouth in the Premier League so Tommy is a good player.
“If he’s available at the right price, he’s a player that would interest us – but it has to be the right price.”
The Mail reports that for Villa to sell Elphick, they would be looking for a fee as close to the amount that they paid for him a year ago as possible.
But while his form since his Villans move may put some off offering that amount, it must not be forgotten that he was a key player in guiding the Cherries to promotion to the Premier League previously, so could certainly be a decent addition to most squads in the Championship.
And if Redknapp struggles to bolster his defensive ranks before the deadline looms, then perhaps spending around £3 million on Elphick may seem like a good piece of business for the Blues to pursue.
