Tottenham’s Harry Kane celebrates scoring their first goal with a penalty
Harry Kane confirmed his place as the Premier League’s leading scorer for 2016/17 in emphatic style on the final day of the season, netting a hat-trick during a 7-1 drubbing of Hull City.
It meant that Kane, who missed eight matches of the campaign through injury, finished with 29 league goals – five ahead of second-placed Romelu Lukaku.
His record this term has once again been amazing, but he actually now deserves to be named among the all-time greats of the Premier League era because of what he has achieved over the past three years.
Kane now has 78 league goals in 116 games for Spurs and has become the first player to win consecutive Golden Boot awards since Robin van Persie. Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry are the only other players to have achieved it.
Scoring more than 20 goals in three successive seasons is a record only matched by Shearer, Henry, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Sergio Aguero. His six hat-tricks are only bettered by Shearer, Henry, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane
From Europe’s top five leagues only four players have scored more – Lionel Messi (37), Edinson Cavani (35), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31) and Robert Lewandowski (30). Esteemed company indeed.
When it is also taken into consideration that Kane is 23-years-old and four years junior to the next youngest from that list (Aubameyang) the England international can justifiably be considered one of the best strikers in the world currently.
