Harry Kane has told Tottenham Hotspur’s website that Son Heung-min has been working harder than ever both with and without the ball to improve his lack of form – after scoring in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
Son, 30, had only scored five goals this season in all competitions prior to Wednesday’s outing. Those five goals came in just two matches – a hat-trick against Leicester, and a brace against Frankfurt. But he got his sixth at Selhurst Park.
With Spurs already leading 3-0 thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and a left-footed finish from Matt Doherty, Son got his chance. Neat play from Bryan Gil allowed Kane to play the ball into Son, and he finished well past Vicente Guaita.
Hopefully for Spurs, it is the kickstart Son needed to go on and have a solid 2023. Antonio Conte needs him to do so. Kane has been supplying the goals but it is not enough if Spurs want a top-four finish. Kane praised Son’s work rate.

“Sometimes you just need a bit of luck to go your way. Sonny has been working so hard with and without the ball in training, at the training ground. When you’re going through spells like that, you’ve just got to work even harder.
“Today, he was getting in good positions and thankfully, one fell his way. Great for him, great for his confidence. He is a very important player for us,” Kane told SpursPlay after the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, when discussing Son.
Kane: Son working harder than ever to improve Tottenham form
What might be evident, is that the injury against Marseille and the subsequent mask has hindered Son. It hindered him throughout the World Cup for South Korea – looking pretty ordinary and failing to score in his four appearances.
Against Villa, he threw it on the ground in disgust – like it was affecting him. Like the mask was the reason for his poor form, and very poor display against Villa. Without the mask on Wednesday, he looked much more like himself.
With Portsmouth on the weekend, Son might be given a rest. But Conte will know that maintaining momentum for a player out of form is key and that could convince him to keep Son in the side.
