Harry Kane has discussed England’s chances of winning the 2026 World Cup ahead of their first group stage game.

The World Cup kicked off on Thursday night with Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

England’s campaign will begin on Wednesday, when they take on Croatia in a repeat of the 2018 semi-final.

The Three Lions have performed well in the last four major tournaments, but they have their eyes on the Jules Rimet trophy.

Kane believes this is the best opportunity of his career to end England’s 60-year drought by winning the World Cup.

What is the biggest weakness in this England side heading into the World Cup?

Thomas Tuchel’s England are the third-favourites to win the 2026 World Cup behind Spain and France.

Tuchel is one of, if not the best, managers at the tournament, and the same can be said of England’s 26-man squad.

The likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Reece James are all among the world’s best in their position.

However, most England supporters would agree that Harry Kane is by far their most valuable player.

The 32-year-old scored an astonishing 61 goals in 51 matches in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season.

The former Tottenham striker is in the form of his life and could even win the Ballon d’Or later this year.

Kane recognises that he will probably never enter an international tournament in a better place to lead England to silverware.

“It could always be your last [World Cup] because you never know what happens in football,” Kane told ITV earlier this week.

“You know what I’m like; I want to play for a long, long time. I feel I’m in my prime and as good as I’ve ever felt. That hunger is there. The World Cup is the pinnacle of any career.

“This is my third tournament now, and with the shape I’m in, coming off the season I’ve had, this is probably the best opportunity I’ll get in my career to win the World Cup.”

With eight goals already, Kane is England’s second-highest goalscorer at World Cups, two behind Gary Lineker.

With up to eight matches ahead for the Three Lions, Kane should be looking to surpass Lineker and perhaps double his tally.
