According to The Times, Manchester United are prepared to offer Jesse Lingard in a potential deal for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
Kane is believed to have told Spurs that he wants to leave the club this summer, and teams are queuing up to sign him.
The report claims that Kane wants to join Manchester City, seemingly believing that Pep Guardiola is the right man for him to play under.
Kane’s representatives believe the £150million asking price is too high, and United seemingly have a plan to bring it down – by offering Lingard as a makeweight.
United are ‘wary’ of negotiating with Daniel Levy, but seemingly hope that dangling the carrot of a deal for Lingard will ease talks.
Lingard, 28, has been on loan at West Ham in 2021, and has smashed a ridiculous nine goals and three assists in 14 games.
Lingard being offered to Spurs now seems much more appealing than it would have been a year ago, but it still seems unlikely that Levy would would be happy to discuss Kane’s exit just because a player who turns 29 in December is being included in the offer.
West Ham would of course be gutted; they would love to keep Lingard long-term having seen him thrive under the tutelage of David Moyes, even being branded a ‘total player’ by Gianfranco Zola.
Not being able to bring him back would hurt enough, but seeing him join rivals Spurs? That would be a bitter pill to swallow.
Even if Lingard is included in the offer, Spurs would still be looking for at least £125million, so United surely still have a long way to go before they can even think about a deal being done.
