Newcastle United are in the market for another striker this summer and Borussia Monchengladbach star Alassane Plea may be hitting form at the right time.
The Magpies signed Chris Wood in January but are expected to add at least one more striker to join him and Callum Wilson on Tyneside.
A number of names were linked in the January window with L’Equipe claiming Newcastle were particularly keen on signing Plea.
Their report claimed that Newcastle were seeking the opinion of winger Allan Saint-Maximin, who played with Plea at Nice.
Likened to Harry Kane for his style of play, Plea is allegedly available this summer with Gladbach keen to sell.
Plea is inside the final 18 months of his contract at Gladbach and the Bundesliga outfit are keen to sell before he leaves for nothing.
That could put Newcastle in the box seat for a deal, reuniting him with Saint-Maximin in a potentially exciting move.
Plea, 29, has hit double figures in goal in each season with Gladbach and is now gunning for the same again after a slow start to the campaign.
On Saturday, Gladbach beat Hertha Berlin 2-0 to bring an end to Tayfun Korkut’s reign in charge of the visitors.
Plea buried a first-half penalty to set Gladbach on their way to victory, continuing his truly brilliant run of form.
In Plea’s last six games, he has now hit three goals and four assists. That kind of form is bound to win him summer interest, with Newcastle no doubt keeping close tabs on his form.
The Magpies have surely been impressed, and will be looking for the Frenchman to keep this kind of run going.
If Plea makes it to double figures yet again, don’t be surprised to see Newcastle make a cut-price move, taking advantage of the striker’s contract situation.
