Paul Merson has suggested on Sky Sports News (12:07pm, August 28, 2021) that Manchester United should have signed Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur instead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer transfer window.

The former Arsenal star has asked why United did not make a move for Tottenham striker Kane instead of bringing in Ronaldo from Juventus.

United announced yesterday that they have agreed a deal with Juventus to re-sign the 36-year-old Portugal international forward.

What Paul Merson has said

Merson said about Ronaldo on Sky Sports News (12:07pm, August 28, 2021): “Will he win the league for Man United? I am going to say no. I am going to say no.

“He is going to play centre-forward, which now Cavani is sitting and thinking, ‘Why did I sign another year?’

“I think it’s going to be hard. I still sit here now and think, ‘Why not go and get Harry Kane?’ Harry Kane is a three-four year option, this is a big, big deal for one season, for one season only. He is 37 in February.”

Not that easy to get Harry Kane

Yes, United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and are not short of money, but it is not easy to sign Kane from Spurs.

Just ask Manchester City.

As manager Pep Guardiola said yesterday, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy did not even want to negotiate because he did not want to sell Kane.

It’s as simple as that.

Kane has a contract with Tottenham, who will know that it is going to be extremely hard for them to find a replacement for the England international.

Tottenham are a wealthy club themselves and are not struggling for money at the moment.

Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri publicly said that Ronaldo had told him that he wanted to leave.

That made it easier for United to bring back Ronaldo to Old Trafford.

Kane is 28 now and is at the top of his game, but Ronaldo is footballing legend who remains one of the best players on the planet.
