The former Southampton man was named Bees captain at the beginning of the season, and is enjoying the added responsibility.

Harlee Dean has told Get West London he is “proud” to have been handed the captain’s armband at Brentford, adding that he intends to seize the opportunity to lead by example.

Dean was named club captain at the beginning of the season, following the departure of previous leader Jake Bidwell to Queens Park Rangers, and was a popular choice for the role among many fans.

However, his position as captain has not been guaranteed, with boss Dean Smith reportedly challenging the defender to prove he can repay the faith shown in him, and produce the performances expected of a skipper.

The 25-year-old has so far lived up to expectations this season, putting in an impressive performance during the 1-0 defeat at Rotherham United.

And he admits he is enjoying the responsibility bestowed on him this season, having made the step up from last season’s role of vice-captain.

He told Get West London: “I’m very proud (to be captain). I always thought I could be a captain and I lead by example on and off the pitch.

“I’ve always been vocal so being a captain doesn’t make a difference to that. I tried to affect the game and get the boys going.

“It’s difficult as a centre half but I found myself in attacking areas quite a lot. I was trying to drive the team forward and make something happen.”

Defeat in South Yorkshire last weekend ended a run of two league wins on the bounce for the Bees, who will look to get their Championship campaign back on trip with a home win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
