Haris Vuckic thinks Newcastle fans have big question about him after Magpies spell

Newcastle United had high hopes for Haris Vuckic back in the day.

Twente playmaker Haris Vuckic has told The Chronicle that he thinks Newcastle United fans will still be wondering whether he could have been a Premier League talent.

The Magpies have seen promising talents from their academy fall away in recent years, such as Adam Armstrong, Nile Ranger, Sammy Ameobi and Kazenga Lua Lua, but Vuckic may be one of the most disappointing cases.

The Slovenian playmaker joined Newcastle from Domzale in in January 2009, and then appeared four times for the Magpies in the 2009-10 campaign.

Vuckic had been linked with AC Milan, so Newcastle fans had high hopes for him, but injuries curtailed his impact as a youngster before he ended up going out on loan to various clubs.

Cardiff City, Rotherham United, Rangers, Wigan Athletic and Bradford City all took Vuckic on loan, with his best spell coming in Scotland’s second tier with Rangers.

In 2017, he left Newcastle permanently for Twente, meaning he had made just 19 appearances in more than eight years with the Magpies, with his time at the club proving to be a disappointment.

Now, Vuckic is in red-hot form in the Eredivisie with four goals in six games for Twente having missed most of last season through injury, and he has reflected on his time at Newcastle.

Vuckic still feels he could have been a Premier League player if he hadn’t suffered so many injuries, and feels Newcastle fans are asking the same questions, but feels his lack of success on Tyneside is his fault, not the club’s.

“If I did not have that many injuries I know I could have played more in the Premier League and maybe still be playing in the Premier League. I just wish I maybe had just one season where I would be totally fit and play 20 or 25 games. I also think you guys in Newcastle still have questions: ‘Would Haris have made it in the Premier League without his injuries?’ That answer will be hard for me to get.”

“You only need one good season and then you sign a massive contract. That was what I didn’t have. It is not Newcastle’s fault, it was my fault. I was unlucky to have so many injuries and as I say, if I had 20 or 25 games I would get the answers I don’t have,” he added.
