The Newcastle United midfielder is far too old to be making do with second string football.
At 24, most footballers will be hoping to be regulars in the first-team, but Haris Vuckic seems as far away from Newcastle United’s senior side as ever.
The attacking midfielder has clocked up loan clubs at a rate of knots but aside from an impressive stint at Rangers, he has struggled to prove he has what it takes to forge a long-term career at St. James’ Park.
He is now back at the Magpies, featuring for their under-23 side when he would have hoped to leave such competitions far behind.
Scoring twice against Bristol City’s under-23s this week is about as good as it has got for the Slovenian in a year when he would have hoped to make a significant impact for Newcastle in the second tier.
Newcastle’s relegation was seemingly the perfect opportunity for some of their promising youngsters and fringe players to finally make their mark. But manager Rafa Benitez had other ideas and Vuckic is surely coming to the end of his time at the club.
With his contract expiring this summer, he looks set to move on for free with Newcastle’s likely promotion back to the Premier League rendering a new deal for Vuckic all but impossible.
After all, if they do not need him in the second tier, they can certainly do without him at the top table of English football.
