Owen Hargreaves says Harvey Elliott was Liverpool’s ‘best player’ alongside Cody Gakpo during their 7-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
The 19-year-old was drafted into the side for the heavyweight showdown and assisted his side’s second goal of the game.
Given how Liverpool humiliated their rivals, with Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino getting on the scoresheet, then Elliott will be kicking himself that he didn’t join that goalscoring party.

Instead, he produced the goods against an in-form Manchester United side that had five-time European Cup winner Casemiro in the middle of the park.
Whilst the first half was pretty even, with the Reds holding a 1-0 lead, things went from disaster to ‘how can you wipe this off our memory?’ for Manchester United.
Former England midfielder Hargreaves was present during the match, as he hailed two of Liverpool’s young guns, as he told Premier League Productions (05/03/23 at 6:55 pm)
“Gakpo, who I probably thought was the best player with Harvey Elliott,” said Hargreaves.
“But they (Manchester United) just didn’t have it defensively. They were so many things wrong. They will think ‘how on earth did we concede seven goals in a game when Liverpool only had eight shots on target?’”

ELLIOTT IS LIVERPOOL’S FUTURE
There has been a lot of talk about Liverpool needing midfielders in the summer.
That 7-0 defeat might have quietened that talk a little, but a refresh of some kind is still going to be needed for the Merseyside giants.
But what shouldn’t be forgotten is the talented teenage star they have on their books in Elliott, who should be given more of an important by Jurgen Klopp next season because the £40k-a-week star (Spotrac) is ready to take that next step in his career.
