Don Goodman has praised ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks for the impact he is having at high-flying Leicester City in the Championship.

The Midlands side are sitting top of the tree in England’s second tier under the guidance of Pep Guardiola’s former assistant, Enzo Maresca.

In the summer, when he was appointed as Leicester’s new man in the dugout, one of the first names he added to his squad was Harry Winks from Tottenham.

The 27-year-old had declined on the Premier League stage, but ex-striker Don Goodman thinks he has now found his feet at the Championship level, as he told Sky Sports News (31/10/23 at 10:35 am).

The EFL expert dubbed Harry Winks a ‘high-calibre’ player and someone who ‘hardly gives the ball away’ for a team that has won 13 out of 14 matches

Tottenham aren’t the only team ripping it up in England because Leicester are going strong, with Harry Winks starting every game in the middle of the park.

Harry Winks’ fall and rise…

“They have all settled in instantly, haven’t they?” said Goodman.

“I mean he is a high calibre player. He has been in England’s squads in the not-too-distant past. This isn’t what he is noted for (scoring from long-range).

“But, occasionally, he has the capability of smashing one into the top corner. What he does when his team have the ball is that he hardly gives it away. He makes good choices. Breaks play up and his range of passing is excellent.”

Harry Winks made a brave move

Given what Winks has on his CV. Played Champions League football. Battled at the top end of the Premier League table. And ten England caps.

Then it would have been easy for him to refuse to drop down a level in order to pick up his stagnating career.

But the quick-thinking midfielder decided to bite the bullet, take a few steps back and now he is reaping the rewards for it.

This is a case of when Leicester get promoted, not if, because it looks like they might return to the Premier League in record-breaking fashion.
