‘Hard to make a case’: BBC Pundit has made his Liverpool vs Chelsea prediction

Liverpool face Chelsea this weekend in what can only be described as a mid-table clash.

It sounds remarkable to describe a game between two of England’s biggest clubs in such a way, but that’s precisely what this game is.

Liverpool sit ninth, while Chelsea sit 10^th going into this game, and neither club would come close to threatening moving into the top four with a win here.

Of course, the season is still in its relatively early stages, and a victory here could be the spark that ignites either team’s season.

With that in mind, Chris Sutton has had a go at predicting the result of this one on BBC Sport.

Sutton predicts a draw

The pundit couldn’t see either team picking up three points here, so he’s predicted a 1-1 draw.

“How on earth can you call this game? Both sides have been incredibly inconsistent this season, and it is impossible to know what they will do next,” Sutton wrote.

“I’ve been unconvinced by Liverpool for a while now, because of their lack of energy and legs in midfield, and their defeat at Brighton last weekend was not even that big a surprise.

“I know the Reds then went and beat Wolves in the FA Cup, but I’ve not seen anything that makes me think they are going to bounce back and clinch their first league win of 2023.

“It is a similar story with Chelsea, because we don’t know which Blues team will turn up at Anfield.

“They got an important win over Crystal Palace last time out but they needed some big saves from Kepa Arrizabalaga to get over the line.

“A win would be a huge boost in confidence for both teams, but it is hard to make a case for either of them to take the three points.”

Don’t look like winning

As Sutton says, it’s incredibly hard to make a case for either team winning this game.

Simply put, both Liverpool and Chelsea don’t look like winning whenever they step onto the pitch at the moment, so a draw may be the most likely result.

The game is at Anfield, so Liverpool may be slight favourites, but given how poor they have been as of late, it’s hard to fancy the Reds to pick up a win here.
