Writing in his Daily Record column, Chris Sutton has passionately written about Odsonne Edouard’s dip in form this season.

The French striker hasn’t quite hit the heights he’s capable of hitting this season, netting just five goals in 12 matches this term, and Sutton believes that his problems are down to a lack of a competent strike partner.

Indeed, Sutton’s column was as much criticising Leigh Griffiths as it was at Edouard, but it was made explicitly clear that Sutton thinks Edouard has regressed.

“That’s down to one man. Griffiths. Only he can sort it. And if he does, what an asset Celtic have again and seeing him back and firing might just light a flame under Edouard. Because, hand on heart, he needs one.

“This boy is falling off a cliff. He’s nothing like the striker who has lit up the Scottish game for the past two previous years.

“It’s hard to actually fathom what is going on with him because he is miles off the pace.”

It’s harsh for Sutton to single out a player who is clearly very talented, but he is right on this one.

The ex-Bhoys striker knows what it takes to be a success as a number nine, and he clearly isn’t happy with what he’s been seeing from Edouard.

To be fair, Edouard hasn’t been absolutely awful, he’s got five goals in 12 matches, which is a semi-respectable return, but the problem is we know he can do so much better, after all, he scored 21 goals in 27 games last term.

Hopefully, Sutton’s view that Edouard needs a competent partner is correct and Neil Lennon can adjust his tactics and get the Frenchman firing again.
