The Arsenal defender has been linked with a return to his former club.
Hannover 96 managing director Martin Bader has told the London Evening Standard that a move for Per Mertesacker is not currently high on their agenda.
The German defender plies his trade at Arsenal, where he has starred since joining in 2011, but he is currently out of the first-team picture after picking up an injury in pre-season that will see him ruled out until next year.
In his absence, compatriot Shkodran Mustafi has struck up a strong partnership with Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the Gunners defence.
As a result, there are doubts about whether 32-year-old Mertesacker will feature regularly for Arsene Wenger’s side again in the future.
Already there has been talk of a return to Hannover and while admitting that they are interested, the club’s managing director says it is not top of their priorities.
“The issue of Per Mertesacker is not currently high on our agenda,” Bader told the London Evening Standard.
“It’s obvious because we are a second division side and he is the captain of Arsenal. A lot really has to come together so that a return is possible. The first requirement is that we get promoted.”
In truth, Mustafi’s impressive start to life at Arsenal is not the only problem for Mertesacker’s hope of future first-team chances.
Youngster Rob Holding is also a competitor for his spot after he impressed earlier this season following his move from Bolton Wanderers.
There is also Calum Chambers to consider, with Arsene Wenger having insisted he has a future at the club despite being allowed to leave on loan this summer.
Gabriel Paulista is another contender, potentially leaving Mertesacker far down the pecking order, and a move could be a smart decision to make.
