Hamburg should have sold Bobby Wood to Everton rather than loan Pierre-Michel Lasogga to Leeds United

Leeds United landed Pierre-Michel Lasogga on loan from Hamburg but the Bundesliga giants refused to sell Bobby Wood to Everton.

Hamburg had made their best start to a Bundesliga season in years when they let Pierre-Michel Lasogga leave on loan to Leeds United late in the summer window.

Things are looking a little less rosy at the top flight’s perennially crisis-ridden underachievers, however, after a dismal September which has supporters once again looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone.

A 0-0 derby draw with fellow strugglers Werder Bremen on Saturday means Hamburg have now failed to win any of their last five Bundesliga fixtures. They also haven’t scored a single goal in that time, making it 465 minutes since Markus Gisdol’s side last hit the net in the first division.

Suddenly, letting Lasogga leave for Leeds looks like a bit of a strange decision. The strapping centre-forward may have struggled with injuries in recent years but he has offered a timely reminder of his qualities with an excellent start to life in English football.

Lasogga has hit the net three times in five starts for Leeds already and, in truth, was the most natural goalscorer at Hamburg’s disposal.

Wrong man?

Gisdol’s side were forced to let go of one of their highest earning players in order to reduce the wage bill, according to The Sun. Yet, with ‘The Dinosaur’ under threat of extinction once again, you wonder whether they would have been better off cashing in on Bobby Wood instead.

The Liverpool Echo reported that Everton were one of a number of Premier League clubs interested in the USA international in the summer with The Toffees needing a striker to replace the goals of Romelu Lukaku.

So far this season, however, Wood has just one in six with his finishing ability still in need of vast improvements. He missed arguably the chance of the game against Bremen at the weekend.

You wonder whether Hamburg would have been better off selling Wood and keeping hold of Lasogga, a player whose lethal finishing is far removed from the American’s tendency to lose his cool.
