The Leeds United loanee could have a future at his parent club but only if he does well this season.
In a recent interview with Hamburger Morgenpost, Hamburg’s sporting director Jens Todt suggested that Leeds United loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga could have a future back in Germany next season, and those comments could be a timely boost for the Whites.
After all, if Lasogga knows the only way he has a future at Hamburg is if he excels in the coming months, the Whites’ promotion hopes could be directly and positively affected.
The 25-year-old started life at Elland Road brilliantly, scoring two goals and setting up two more in a 5-0 victory against Burton Albion.
Another goal in a 3-2 win against Ipswich Town kept the ball rolling, but Lasogga was an unused substitute in the defeat to Cardiff City and could not prevent Leeds from losing two on the bounce when he started against Sheffield Wednesday.
While some Leeds fans may see Todt’s comments as disappointing, the truth is with no purchase agreement – and with Hamburg picking up a huge proportion of Lasogga’s wages this year – a permanent move to Elland Road was never really on the cards.
The best Leeds can hope for is a fine one-off season for a striker who is brilliant on his day, and what better way to prove himself to his parent club than by firing his temporary one back to the top flight? It would be a fairy tale ending both for Leeds and the player, who would leave Yorkshire a hero.
With Leeds desperate for a victory against Reading on Saturday, Todt’s comments may have come at the perfect time, motivating Lasogga just when he appeared to be coming off the boil.
