Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City on Saturday that Davinson Sanchez has ‘never really kicked on’ at the club.

In 2017, Spurs opted to dip into the Dutch market and secure the services of one of Ajax’s highly-rated talents in Sanchez for a then club-record fee of £42 million (Guardian).

But fast forward to today and Sanchez is falling flat on his face when trying to defend a ball over the top from Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

It clearly hasn’t gone to plan for the now-24-year-old defender.

Carragher shared that since his promising first season under Mauricio Pochettino, he hasn’t really seen much from the Tottenham player.

“Sanchez, Spurs had high hopes of him,” said Carragher.

“Certainly in that first season when he came in and he did really well under Pochettino. But he has never really kicked on.”

It doesn’t help Sanchez’s cause that Spurs don’t have stability at the back or any real quality other than at left-back with summer signing Sergio Reguilon.

There has always been a concern at right-back, Hugo Lloris is still making mistakes and the previously reliable Toby Alderweireld is now seemingly past his best.

Eric Dier is still trying to convince people that he can play at the back and Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon are youngsters.
