Well, Liverpool certainly didn’t play like Premier League champions last night.
Jurgen Klopp’s side officially won the title last week when Manchester City lost 2-1 away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool had a chance to prove why they’re champions on Thursday when the Reds visited Eastlands.
But City put on a clinic and demolished Klopp’s side, who were thumped 4-0.
First-half goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden gave Pep Guardiola’s side an emphatic lead at the half-way point, before an own goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain compounded the visitors’ misery during the second half.
Joe Gomez conceded a 25th-minute penalty by tugging Sterling’s shirt inside the box, and the Liverpool defender was somewhat culpable for the second, as the former Anfield winger cut inside him and fired home.
In truth, Sterling gave Gomez a really difficult first 45 minutes, and here’s how Dion Dublin saw it.
Dublin briefly told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Joe Gomez is not a bad player but he has had a stinker against Raheem Sterling in the first half.”
Klopp obviously knew that Sterling was getting far too much joy against the former Charlton Athletic youth, who was replaced by Oxlade-Chamberlain at the break.
Last night wasn’t a reflection on Gomez, who has been brilliant for virtually the entire campaign, but to be truthful, a lot of the German’s players simply weren’t up for it and that’s reflected in the scoreline.
