Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson is now a summer target for Everton according to reports.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s comments to FourFourTwo, when Ashley Williams left Swansea City to join Everton last summer, make particularly interesting reading now Ronald Koeman is interested in signing him.
Everton are reportedly lining up a mega-money bid for Sigurdsson this summer (Daily Mirror), as they believe the Icelandic international would be a great addition to their squad.
And Sigurdsson’s quotes, when Williams left to join Everton, do perhaps indicate that he doesn’t see himself spending the rest of his career at the Liberty Stadium.
Williams had been at Swansea for eight years, prior to move to Everton last summer.
And although Sigurdsson was gutted to lose the Welsh international, he sympathised with the defender for wanting a new challenge.
“Of course you’re disappointed when a player like [Williams] leaves,” Sigurdsson said to FourFourTwo.
“He’s our skipper, but not just the fact that he’s our captain. He’s a great guy, a big character in the dressing room and also a good friend.
“These things happen in football. He’s 31, 32, and he’s getting a four-year contract [sic] to take him to 36, which is fantastic for a defender.
“He’s been at the club for eight years or so, so you can’t blame him for wanting to try something new before he ends his career.”
A move to Everton could, therefore, appeal to Sigurdsson as not only would it offer him the chance to link back up with Williams, but the 27-year-old would also have a different challenge presented to him.
Of course, Sigurdsson’s current situation is not quite the same as Williams’ was, but there are similarities that can be drawn up.
Sigurdsson will be heading into his fifth season with Swansea next term, and at his current age, he is entering the peak of his career.
A move to Everton could be one of Sigurdsson’s last chances to get another move to a top four chasing club, after his switch to Tottenham Hotspur didn’t work out.
And, after his comments following Williams’ departure, Everton should feel confident that they have a strong chance of persuading Sigurdsson to move to Merseyside, if they can agree a fee with Swansea.
