Sigurdsson is to be announced as a Tottenham Hotspur player, turning down both Swansea City and Liverpool.
Gylfi Sigurdsson has been a young man with a huge decision to make, and it appears he has made his choice.
Sky Sports reported last night that he is to be announced as Andre Villas-Boas’ first signing at Spurs.
The goalscoring Icelander is bound to be a success at the club, only 22-years-old, he impressed on loan at the Swans last season, scoring one his seven goals against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
But what about the two clubs appears to have spurned?
Swansea City might well feel put out. After impressing on loan there last season his move to South Wales was almost agreed until Brendan Rodgers quit.
The midfielder was only a medical away from joining the club, but left them hanging the second uncertainty appears.
Danish legend Michael Laudrup taking over was not enough to convince him to see the deal through.
The main reason for his uncertainty was Liverpool’s interest. It had seemed most logical that he would join the Reds after they made their interest clear, especially with the Rodgers connection.
So the Spurs link came a bit out of the blue, and both sides will feel somewhat miffed that they have been beaten to the punch by the North London club.
Who should feel more put out? For Swansea there is no shame in losing out on a player to a big club like Liverpool or Tottenham, it’s the law of the jungle, and after seeing Rodgers go to Anfield it seemed inevitable.
Liverpool will feel a bit perplexed as to how Tottenham have managed to sell themselves to Sigurdsson, at a time when they were going through real managerial uncertainty.
Is it a dent to the ego of Liverpool fans? It has to be, yet they will hope to move onto another target, and they will hope to have little trouble in buying a talented goalscoring midfielder.
Swansea may find it slightly trickier to replace their loan star. Finding Sigurdsson was a real coup for the club, will they find a player as talented and willing to come? That remains to be seen.
Both clubs now must move on, Tottenham meanwhile, appear to have bagged themselves a bargain.
