Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson faces former club Tottenham this afternoon.
Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson has told the Daily Star that he feels he became a better player with Tottenham, as he prepares to face his former club this afternoon.
The Toffees will be hoping to bounce back from the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea before the international break when they face Spurs today, with manager Ronald Koeman no doubt hoping for a major impact from Sigurdsson.
Sigurdsson, 27, became Everton’s club-record signing last month having completed a big-money move from Swansea City, where he became a star following a 2014 move from Spurs.
Sigurdsson notched 30 goals in 112 games for Swansea, and he will now be called upon for both goals and assists during his time with Everton, and he will hope to build on the two goals he scored for Iceland in midweek when he faces his former club.
The playmaker hit 13 goals in 83 games for Tottenham following a 2012 move from Hoffenheim, but he failed to really play to the best of his ability on a consistent basis for Spurs, as he was often shoved out on the left hand side of midfield, before being offloaded to former loan club Swansea in 2014.
Now one of the Premier League’s most productive attacking midfielders, Sigurdsson has told the Daily Star that he feels he became a better player with Tottenham, but isn’t looking to prove a point to the club today, and still looks out for their results having enjoyed his time in North London.
“It definitely helped me as a person and as a player,” said Sigurdsson. “When I came into Tottenham and when I came out of there to go back to Swansea I was a much better player. I was more mature, more experienced and I learnt a lot playing with the top players there. I really enjoyed the time there. It is a club that I will always look out for the results of and when we are playing them.”
“Of course I had a few years left on my contract and I probably could have stayed. It was the time when Pochettino was coming in but I had kind of made up my mind I wanted to change it up and go to Swansea and get some games under my belt which has helped me over the last three years and brought me to Everton. Am I here with a point to prove? Not at all, there is nothing like that going on,” he added.
It was only in December 2016 when Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino – who allowed Sigurdsson to leave Tottenham three years ago – admitted to the Daily Mirror that he now feels Sigurdsson is ideal for Spurs and it’s a shame he ever left the club, giving the midfielder the perfect chance to haunt his former manager this afternoon, and whilst the playmaker isn’t seeking revenge, he would no doubt love a goal on his home Premier League debut for Everton, and it would be even sweeter against Spurs.
