Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after hearing that Andros Townsend has joined Everton.

What’s the story?

Well, some fans probably expected Townsend to be staying on at Selhurst Park, despite the expiry of his contract.

The 30-year-old made 25 Premier League starts for the Eagles last season, scoring one goal while also registering five assists.

However, it seems as if Patrick Vieira is keen to go in a different direction.

19-year-old Michael Olise – who plays out on the right flank like Townsend – has arrived in south London from Reading.

In that respect, it’s clear the Eagles want to make their side younger, and Townsend has been a casualty of that approach.

According to the BBC, the 13-cap England international was closing in on a reunion with Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.

Now, Everton have announced him as their first summer signing.

Funnily enough, Vieira and Townsend worked on ITV together during EURO 2020.

While on duty, Townsend joked with Vieira about him becoming the new Crystal Palace manager, and whether or not he’d offer him a deal.

It would’ve been easy for Vieira to hand the ex-Tottenham man fresh terms, given their relationship.

However, the Frenchman clearly isn’t that interested in making friends in SE25 – his fairly ruthless decision with Townsend shows he means business.

Let’s see how the Crystal Palace fans reacted after hearing about Townsend’s move to Merseyside…
