Rhys Williams has returned to Liverpool after his season-long loan spell at Swansea City was cut short. The Reds defender has posted on Instagram, branding himself as “gutted” that things did not go to plan.
Williams, 20, signed for the Championship club for the 2021-22 campaign after making 19 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season. The loan was seen as the perfect chance to further his first-team exposure.
But, fast forwarding until now, Swansea are struggling in the Championship – sitting in 17th. While they have three games in hand on many of their opponents, they are some way off last season, reaching the play-off final.
Williams himself, played just seven times for Swansea, with the odd injury halting his progress in Wales. The Championship side confirmed the news on Twitter and their website – ending his tricky spell at the halfway stage.

Whether Williams goes on loan to another club, remains to be seen. Nat Phillips could be sold by the Reds before the end of the transfer window, though the Echo report they have rejected two offers – one from Watford.
But the Reds still boast four central defenders in Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez – the latter being linked with a move too. Of course, Fabinho can always drop into the middle of the defence.
Williams might, then, go back out on loan to a side that intend on using him more regularly than he was played at Swansea. Williams posted on Instagram, saying he was disappointed with how things had gone.
