Gus Poyet has told the Daily Star he was feared the worst for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Poyet was concerned by Kyle Walker’s departure, and felt it could spark a succession of exits.

He now feels confident that Tottenham will resist any more major players leaving, and believes they are staying on course for sustained success.

He said: “Spurs are now keeping the main players although when I saw Walker leaving I was a bit worried. I thought ‘Here we go again.’

“But Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are not going anywhere in a hurry and they are moving into a new stadium in order to compete.”

Tottenham are enjoying an impressive season so far, blotted only by an early exit from the Carabao Cup.

They sit in third place in the Premier League and are top of their Champions League group.

Perhaps though it should be concerning that Kyle Walker’s Manchester City are top of the Premier League; if City win it will justify their decision.

Tottenham do not want to be ‘nearly men’ forever, but as Poyet points out, their new stadium and financial rewards that will bring should help their goal to become the country’s dominant team.
