The Uruguayan says Tottenham were right to remove him and Juande Ramos nine years ago.
Gus Poyet has admitted to Four Four Two that Tottenham Hotspur were proven right in their decision to part company with him and manager Juande Ramos in 2008.
The Uruguayan was Ramos’s first-team coach at Tottenham for a year, before the club sacked the duo – along with Director of Football Damien Comolli and fitness coach Marcos Alvarez – after winning two points from their first eight games in the 2008-09 campaign.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy hired Harry Redknapp to replace the Spanish manager and the North Londoners were a Champions League club within two years.
Fast forward almost nine years and Tottenham is a very different club, with Mauricio Pochettino leading the Lilywhites to Premier League title challenges, as well as back-to-back top-four finishes in the top flight.
And although Poyet admits it was not nice for him and Ramos – who won Spurs’ last trophy, a League Cup title in 2008 – to be sacked, the South American concedes that it was the correct move by Levy.
“It was a tough time for me, it was the first time I was sacked and it wasn’t nice, but you learn from it and I think it was the right decision,” he told Four Four Two.
“Seeing where Spurs are now, you have to believe that. Why try to make excuses?
“The only problem is, they need to win another trophy, because their last one was won by Ramos, and until they do, Ramos is in the history of the club.”
