One bookmaker’s odds on Gus Poyet becoming the next Sheffield Wednesday manager have shortened significantly over the past 24 hours.
Poyet emerged as second favourite with Sky Bet to succeed Carlos Carvalhal at Hillsborough last week, however, the Uruguayan later drifted from 5/2 to 16/1.
And he is now as short as 2/1 with the same bookmaker, behind odds-on favourite Paul Lambert (8/15).
Previous favourite Steve McClaren (11/1) is next on Sky Bet’s list of likely Sheffield Wednesday appointments, ahead of Claudio Ranieri (14/1) and Andre Villas-Boas (16/1).
Former Charlton Athletic boss Jose Riga also features, at 18/1, following the arrival of the Addicks’ chief executive Katrien Meire at Hillsborough.
Poyet, who is out of work following a spell at Shanghai Shenhua earlier this year, led Brighton to the League One title and back-to-back top-six finishes in the Championship before a disappointing stint at Sunderland in the Premier League, and has also managed AEK Athens and Real Betis.
