Could the former Brighton & Hove Albion and Sunderland boss succeed Carlos Carvalhal at Sheffield Wednesday?

Gus Poyet is the new second favourite to become Sheffield Wednesday’s next manager with one bookmaker. The former Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion boss is out of work following a spell at Shanghai Shenhua earlier this year.
Poyet’s odds of succeeding Carlos Carvalhal at Wednesday were as long as 20/1 with Sky Bet on Thursday, but have since been cut to 5/2.
The Uruguayan led Brighton to the League One title and back-to-back top-six finishes in the Championship before a disappointing spell at Sunderland, and has also managed AEK Athens and Real Betis.

Steve McClaren [8/11] remains the front-runner for the Hillsborough vacancy – despite recent reports which suggest the former England manager is not a contender – with caretaker Lee Bullen [6/1] now third in the running, having been 11/1 on Thursday.
Andre Villas-Boas [14/1] is another big mover, having previously occupied odds of 25/1. The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager was most recently in charge of Shanghai SIPG.

Aitor Karanka is 14/1 himself, with Nigel Pearson – the former Wednesday captain – and early favourite Paulo Fonseca both at 18s.
McClaren is the only candidate reported to have held talks with the Owls so far.
