Gus Poyet has claimed that he cannot see Tottenham Hotspur parting company with head coach Jose Mourinho anytime soon, despite their Premier League form.
Spurs lost 1-0 to Chelsea in North London last night to leave themselves seven points adrift of the Champions League qualification places.
It’s important for Tottenham to capitalise on the financial spoils of reaching Europe’s elite competition after breaking their club record on Tanguy Ndombele 18 months ago and moving into their £1 billion new stadium.
But finishing in the top four looks a tall order and there’s been suggestions that the Portuguese coach – who has won only two of his last 10 Premier League games – should be under pressure in North London.
That being said, the Lilywhites haven’t won a trophy since 2008 and Mourinho has guided them into a League Cup final against Manchester City later this season.
And former Tottenham star Poyet has told Astro Sport that he cannot see Daniel Levy wielding the axe on his coach before that occasion on April 25.
He said: “Nothing will happen before the [League Cup] final. I don’t want to think he’s under pressure. They want trophies and he’s in a final and there’s still plenty of the season left. It’s a slightly different situation with Frank Lampard. You don’t know what’s going on internally, but definitely the cup final helps.”
Even winning the League Cup might not be enough to save Mourinho if the North Londoners do finish outside the top four for a second season running.
Trophies are important, but so is getting back into the Champions League and if Tottenham are nowhere near come May, it’ll give Levy a difficult decision.
