Gus Poyet has admitted to the Chronicle that Sunderland fans’ passion for their team can sometimes have a negative impact.

Sunderland supporters have always followed their team in great numbers, and they are renowned for their vociferous backing of their team.

And while Poyet believes that Sunderland fans deserve a better team, he also suggests this passion can make things hard for the team, when results are going badly.

“I think they are passionate [the fans], which can be both good and bad. I remember people stopping me in the street literally crying when we got to the final of the League Cup or saying to me ‘keep us in the Premier League and beat Newcastle and you’ll be all right,” Poyet said.

“I wasn’t because I beat Newcastle every time and kept them up and it was not enough to stay there.

“But definitely I think they deserve a more consistent team and more consistent club for them to be able to enjoy it week-in, week-out.”

Sunderland supporters have started to vote with their feet recently, with attendances dropping at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have not won a league game at the Stadium of Light in the entirety of 2017, with their form highly concerning.

The Black Cats are currently sat at the bottom of the Championship table, with back-to-back relegations now a distinct possibility.

Simon Grayson has recently lost his job as Sunderland manager, and they are still searching for his replacement.

Sunderland are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Millwall.
