Gus Poyet celebrates the equaliser in the North London derby

Gus Poyet has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on 26th April on TalkSPORT, that he doesn’t believe going down to the Championship will benefit Sunderland.

Sunderland are currently sat at the bottom of the Premier League table and they look doomed.

The Black Cats have been trapped inside the relegation zone for some time, and Moyes’ side are currently 12 points adrift of safety.

With just six games left to play this season, Sunderland will have to put together a remarkable run of results to save themselves.

However, there has been a suggestion that going down could benefit Sunderland, as it could give them a chance to reset.

The Wearsiders have been perennial relegation strugglers, and some supporters have hinted that a drop into the second tier could help the Black Cats in the long-run.

But former boss Poyet insists that there is no upside for Sunderland, if they fall into the Championship.

“I agree with you [that going down won’t benefit Sunderland],” he said.

“I know it’s sounds easy, but it’s not. Going down to the Championship is tremendous. You never finish the Championship – you play so many games! It’s not a good idea, but it looks like it’s going to happen.

“When you’re playing with fire every year, eventually you are going to get burnt. You are kind of expecting them to go down. It’s a shame for the city.

“It’s tough for the people of Sunderland, and it’s a shame. I really feel for them.”
