Poyet Snr is the second member of his family to be linked with Rangers, but could he be the next Ibrox boss?

Manager Gustavo Poyet of Sunderland looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Aston Villa at Stadium of Light on March 14, 2015 in Sunderland, England.

Gus Poyet has formally admitted an interest in the vacant manger’s job at Rangers FC.

Reports earlier this month suggested Poyet would be keen on succeeding Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox [Herald].

But the Uruguayan, whose son Diego was linked with a move to Rangers when Mark Warburton was manager [Scottish Sun], has since confirmed it for himself.

Diego Poyet of West Ham United in action during the pre-season friendly match between Ipswich Town and West Ham United at Portman Road on July 16, 2014 in Ipswich, England.

“I would [be interested in the Rangers job],” Poyet told the Daily Star. “Nobody has called me and nobody has said anything but it is one of the jobs I would be interested in.”

Poyet, a former player with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and others, left Shanghai Shenhua earlier this year.

The 50-year-old has also managed Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland, AEK Athens and Real Betis.

Rangers sacked Caixinha three weeks ago today, but as of last Friday are yet to interview any candidates.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, there appears to be little rush, with caretaker boss Graeme Murty winning both his games in temporary charge.

Rangers are currently fourth in the Premiership standings, but have a game in hand on third-place Hibernian, who are only one point better off than the Ibrox side.

Should Rangers consider Gus Poyet as Pedro Caixinha’s successor?
