Gus Poyet believes there’s a key reason why Sunderland are struggling so badly

Sunderland are currently in 23rd place in the Championship table, after a terrible start to the season.

Gus Poyet has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 31st October, that Sunderland were always doomed for relegation – as they changed managers far too often.

Sunderland have endured a lack of success lately, with the side eventually losing their perennial battle against Premier League relegation last season.

Things have only got worse for the Black Cats since dropping into the Championship, and they currently sit in 23rd place in the Championship table.

And Poyet believes that Sunderland are set to continue to suffer, as they don’t have the correct mentality.

“I feel sorry for them,” Poyet said. “When I was there it was very difficult. The following year when we were just outside the bottom three they were expecting us to do much better, and I just left.

“You keep changing, and sooner or later you go down. David Moyes was the unlucky one. Someone was in danger of going down.

“And now to come out of the Championship is tremendous. Half of the teams want to go up, if not more. If three go up, for everyone else it looks like a failure. No!

“If you don’t have the right mentality, you are going to suffer.”

There are real fears that Sunderland could suffer back-to-back relegation unless their results dramatically improve.

Sunderland take on Bolton Wanderers tonight, and if they are beaten in front of their own fans, then Simon Grayson’s side will slip to the bottom of the Championship table.

Grayson has come under huge pressure at Sunderland, and another defeat could spell the end for the former Preston North End boss.
