With Ilkay Gundogan’s contract set to expire next summer, he has discussed the prospect of joining Liverpool, in a bid to reunite with former boss Jurgen Klopp after their storied spell in tandem at Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool’s midfield woes

One of the biggest talking points surrounding Liverpool’s demise has been their dearth of quality in midfield.

Jordan Henderson and James Milner’s underwhelming performances have led many to state that their time at the elite level may be behind them.

As for Fabinho, several fans and pundits alike struggle to understand how one of the best defensive midfielders in the world suddenly looks past his sell-by date at Anfield.

While Thiago has maintained his stellar displays this season as well, missing 6 games due to injury, and several others due to recovering from said knocks has meant he has missed a significant chunk of the season so far.

In the cases of Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, the ex-Fulham pair certainly have all the makings of top players, but are still at nascent stages in their careers to spearhead the Reds’ midfield.

With Ilkay Gundogan once again proving this season why he is hailed as one of the best midfielders in Europe, his potential addition would elevate Liverpool’s midfield to unseen levels.

Gundogan on linking up with Klopp once again at Anfield

When quizzed about whether he could reunite with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool amidst uncertainties surrounding his contract situation at City, Ilkay Gundogan flat-out rejected any such possibilities.

“I think I can rule out that”, he told Kicker.

“Everyone knows how much I like and appreciate Kloppo but I’ve been at City for a few years now and as City captain to rival Liverpool? No, I can’t imagine that.”

While Ilkay Gundogan would certainly be a smash success if he played under Jurgen Klopp once again at Liverpool, his loyalty to Manchester City remains unshakeable.
