Is Kasper Schmeichel joining Newcastle United?
Well, there’s certainly beginning to be speculation about it.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook today, the Leicester City goalkeeper is very much on Newcastle’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 35-year-old Denmark international is absolutely a legendary figure at the King Power Stadium and helped them to a stunning Premier League title in 2016 until Claudio Ranieri, along with an FA Cup under Brendan Rodgers last season.
There’s no doubt that he’s a brilliant goalkeeper – even if he didn’t look it on his most recent visit to St James’s Park.
Newcastle beat Rodger’s side 2-1 in the North East on April 17.
January signing Bruno Guimaraes was the hero for the Magpies, scoring a double – including a last-minute winner – but his first goal of that afternoon embarrassed Schmeichel.
The Foxes stopper did well initially to keep out the Brazilian’s swivelled shot, denying the South American with his legs.
But Schmeichel wasn’t quick enough to get both hands on the ball and the Newcastle sensation nutmegged him on the ground, leaving the Dane with egg on his face.
Guimaraes has made a lot of Premier League players look relatively foolish since joining Eddie Howe’s troops earlier this year, because he’s brilliant and that’s what brilliant footballers can do
And honestly, Newcastle fans would love Schmeichel for the most part.
Martin Dubravka is a very capable stopper, evident by his performance against Liverpool recently, but the City veteran might be that bit better and it’ll be fascinating to see if the rumours from talkSPORT are true.
