Guillem Balague surprised Spurs aren't targeting Premier League boss

Guillem Balague can’t believe that Tottenham Hotspur haven’t pursued a move to appoint Julen Lopetegui this summer.

Julen Lopetegui’s future at Wolverhampton Wanderers is unclear and Guillem Balague thinks Tottenham should be interested.

Wolves have comfortably secured their Premier League status having landed Lopetegui as their new boss in November.

The Spaniard has claimed 10 wins and six draws from his 26 games, dragging Wolves away from the drop.

Lopetegui’s future is now in doubt though.

The Guardian report that Lopetegui will hold talks with Wolves this week in order to thrash out his future.

Wolves are in danger of breaching Financial Fair Play rules and Lopetegui fears he won’t have the backing required to take the club forward.

Lopetegui may well leave Wolves this summer and Spanish analyst Guillem Balague thinks he could be the man for Tottenham.

Balague has taken to Twitter to admit that he finds it ‘surprising’ that Lopetegui isn’t on Tottenham’s wish list.

Spurs appear to be focusing on appointing Feyenoord boss Arne Slot as their new manager but Balague thinks Lopetegui should be in the frame.

Tottenham did want Julen Lopetegui in 2021

Lopetegui has been on the Tottenham radar in the past.

Tottenham allegedly agreed a deal to bring Lopetegui to North London back in 2021, whilst he was shining as Sevilla boss.

However, the deal reportedly fell through due to Brexit rules and a €5million (£4.5million) move was kiboshed.

Wolves didn’t face those problems when they made their move for Lopetegui and the Spaniard may well want to stay in the Premier League.

It’s hard to see Tottenham reviving their interest in Lopetegui now though.

Lopetegui is a fairly conservative manager and definitely smacked of being a Fabio Paratici target.

Daniel Levy is now going in a different direction with Slot’s free-flowing, attacking football wanted at Spurs.

Lopetegui is bound to have suitors in the Premier League but we can’t see Tottenham being one of them right now.
