Newcastle United have signed Mikel Merino on a season-long loan deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.

Well-known Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has taken to social networking site Twitter to share his opinion on new Newcastle United summer signing Mikel Merino.

Premier League club Newcastle have signed Merino on a season-long loan deal from German club Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old midfielder has become the Magpies’ fifth signing of the summer so far following the arrivals of Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, Jacob Murphy and Javier Manquillo.

The Spain Under-21 international started his professional club football career at Spanish club Osasuna and left for Bundesliga outfit Dortmund in the summer of 2016.

Merino was able to make only two starts and six substitute appearances in the Bundesliga for Dortmund last season, according to WhoScored.

Sky Sports Spanish football journalist and expert Balague has shared his opinion on Merino on Twitter.

Balague has compared the youngster to Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso and to 20-year-old midfielder Dani Ceballos, who joined Real Madrid from Real Betis this summer for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £14.5 million.

Former Sunderland midfielder Don Hutchison has also taken to Twitter to give his verdict on Merino.
