Crystal Palace must now decide whether to make the deal happen now or wait until the summer.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has told Sky Sports that Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita has passed a medical ahead of signing for Crystal Palace.

Guaita is out of contract with Getafe at the end of the season and has agreed to join the Eagles on a free transfer, but Balague understands the move could happen in January.

According to Sky Sports, the 30-year-old’s contract has a £3.5m release clause that would allow him to leave Getafe this month, if Palace want to bring the deal forward.

Roy Hodgson has been undecided between Wayne Hennessey and veteran Julian Speroni since taking over at Selhurst Park and could do with a new number one.

Despite their remarkable turnaround under Hodgson, the Eagles remain only three points above the relegation zone so improving their squad this month is important.

Goalkeeper Vicente Guaita of Getafe CF stops the ball during the La Liga match between Getafe CF and FC Barcelona at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on October 31, 2015 in Getafe, Spain.

The £3.5m price quoted is small change if Hodgson feels that Guaita, who has made 160 La Liga appearances across spells at Getafe and Valencia, is a significant step up on the goalkeeping options already available to him.

Palace already signed Benfica midfielder Erdal Rakip and Poland defender Jaroslaw Jach this month, but without spending any major funds. Rakip has joined on loan and Jach cost only £2m, according to Standard Sport.
