Guillem Balague has claimed on Twitter that Rafael Benitez will not go to Celtic.

The well-known and well-respected Spanish football journalist has said that there was interest from Celtic in the former Newcastle United manager before.

However, according to Balague, the defending Scottish Premiership champions are not an option for Benitez now.

The Mirror has reported that Benitez is set to take over as the Celtic manager, having parted company with Chinese Super League club Dalian Pro.

Current Celtic manager Neil Lennon is under pressure due to the team struggling to challenge bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title this season, according to the report.

What a blockbuster appointment it would be

Benitez is one of the best managers in the world who has been in charge of some of the biggest clubs, such as Real Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea.

One suspects that the Spaniard will get offers from top clubs soon, and one should not be surprised if he is back in charge of a European team soon.

Benitez would be a blockbuster managerial appointment for Celtic, but it seems that it is not an option.
