The midfielder has impressed for Everton following the appointment of Sam Allardyce
Everton’s resurgence under Sam Allardyce continued with a 1-0 victory away to Newcastle United, with the performance of Idrissa Gueye one of the standout features of the game.
Wayne Rooney hit the headlines as he found the net again but Gueye also made a significant contribution as he anchored the midfield expertly and kept possession extremely effectively.
Gueye may not be the archetypal Allardyce defensive-midfielder in that he has a tendency to contribute to attacking play in addition to his defensive duties, but the 28-year-old has been hugely impressive of late and could have a major part to play under the new regime.
As a collective Everton are playing with increased confidence following Allardyce’s arrival and go into Monday’s game at home to Swansea City in the knowledge that they will still be in the top half of the table regardless of the other results this weekend.
Gueye produced some excellent performances for Aston Villa in the 2015/16 season, which earned him a move to Everton, but, despite some flashes of brilliance, he has struggled to perform consistently for the Toffees lately.
In the past few weeks, though, there have been signs that the Senegal international is starting to step up and he has certainly played his part in making Everton more resilient under Allardyce, with the club having conceded just once in three Premier League games under their new manager.
