Matteo Guendouzi has revealed that Mesut Ozil was far and away the best player he saw at Arsenal.
The Germany World Cup winner quit the Gunners after seven-and-a-half years in North London last month and ultimately joined Fenerbahce on a free transfer after having his £350,000-a-week deal terminated.
Ozil hadn’t kicked a ball for Arsenal since March of last year after falling down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta in a major way, as he had done several times during Unai Emery’s reign.
But away from the field, at London Colney, the 32-year-old, who is one of the most talented players to have joined the Emirates Stadium side, seemingly continued to dazzle, as Guendouzi claimed to Oh My Goal on Twitter.
Guendouzi, who also struggled under Arteta and is now on loan with Hertha Berlin, said when asked about the best player he’s played alongside: “Mesut Ozil. Technically, whether he’s on the pitch during a match or on the training ground he has a technical ease. He reads the game better than everyone else. He’s a player I’ve loved playing with.”
It’s no secret that Ozil was a huge talent and it’s a big shame that only Arsene Wenger was able to draw that ability out of him on a semi-regular basis.
But even the legendary Frenchman might admit that Ozil was never close to being one of Arsenal’s more consistent players and therefore he may forever remain something of an enigma among fans.
