Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has told BBC Sport that he saw how determined Liverpool’s players were to beat them in the guard of honour.
City had to line up to clap Liverpool’s starting line-up on to the field of play, to congratulate them for winning the Premier League.
And Guardiola said that he spotted on the Liverpool players’ faces just how determined they were to pick up the three points last night.
Unfortunately for the Reds, they were unable to topple a City side, who appeared to want to send out a message.
Guardiola’s men won 4-0, with Liverpool unable to live with City’s attacking prowess.
And Guardiola said: “We beat a team who didn’t come here just being the champions to celebrate. They came here to beat us.
“I noticed on their faces in the guard of honour, I saw their faces in the first minutes and how they communicate with each other.
“That’s why I give a lot of credit to what we’ve done today.”
Liverpool, of course, will not be unduly concerned by the result – but Jurgen Klopp’s annoyance was clear in his interviews at full-time.
Liverpool had come to win, but City ultimately outclassed them on the evening.
Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden all found the back of the net, as Guardiola’s men put in one of their most impressive displays of the campaign to take the three points.
