Grzegorz Krychowiak will be worth the two-year wait for West Brom boss Tony Pulis

West Brom pulled off a huge coup landing the Polish international midfielder from PSG on a season-long loan.

Just a year ago, Grzegorz Krychowiak was swapping Sevilla for Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth £28 million after a series of dominant performances at Euro 2016 (BBC).

A year on, however, he was joining West Brom on loan – a surefire sign that his debut season in Paris didn’t quite go to plan. There is little doubting Krychowiak’s qualities – he is a hugely powerful midfielder blessed with excellent reading of the game and organisational skills.

However, it was his ability with the ball, or alleged lack of, that meant he stood out like a sore thumb in PSG’s hugely technical side.

Yet, West Brom aren’t exactly known for dominating possession and the pragmatic play that made Krychowiak a key player in Unai Emery’s counter-attacking Sevilla should make him a much better fit under Tony Pulis at The Hawthorns.

It appears that the chance to land the Polish international on loan was too good to turn down for The Baggies. The Birmingham Mail report that they even smashed their wage structure to bring him to the club as Pulis is a huge fan – he has even tracked the 27-year-old for a number of years.

Worth the wait

“I first tried to get him two years ago and it didn’t work out,” Pulis explained to the club’s official website. “And I’ve been trying to get him every window since!

“I kept being told it wouldn’t happen but I am really, really pleased that we have persuaded him to come to us.”

And Krychowiak could be worth the wait. The 45-time international was a key figure as Sevilla won the Europa League in 2015 and 2016, scoring in the final against Dnipro to set them on their way to a thrilling 3-2 win two years ago.

And it’s difficult to imagine a player better suited to Pulis’ style – though Krychowiak is a huge step up from the likes of Claudio Yacob and even Darren Fletcher. After a disastrous season at PSG, he appears to have found the perfect club that will appreciate his qualities.
