Nottingham Forest want Mimoun Mahi in January and Eredivisie outfit Groningen are more than happy to comply.
Nottingham Forest could hardly be targeting Groningen goal machine Mimoun Mahi at a better time. Because the Eredivisie club’s director admitted to Voetbal International earlier in the week that he would not stand in the striker’s way with a transfer potentially on the cards in January.
Mahi has emerged as Groningen’s star man since moving from the wing into a more centre forward position at the start of the 2016/17 season. In this year alone, the 23-year-old has 16 goals in 26 Eredivisie games.
It appears that Mahi will not get many more chances to add to that tally, however. Voetbal International reports that the Moroccan international has been disciplined by Groningen for his poor behaviour and, while General Director Hans Nijland has refused to go into details, he admits that Mahi may be on his way out in January.
“He might be playing for a transfer, but he forgot the team’s interest,” Nijland said. “For all parties, it’s best if he gets a transfer.”
“He has failed to fulfil behavioural standards. Limits have been exceeded. Our credibility was at stake. The other players also expected us to intervene.”
If Nottingham Forest are willing to overlook the striker’s indiscretion, it appears they have a very good chance of bringing Mahi to England in the New Year.
The Sun reports that the Championship side are interested though there is no shortage of competition. Premier League duo Stoke and Swansea are keen as are Bristol City, who saw a bid rejected in the summer transfer window for a striker who has a £2 million release clause in his contract.
Though Forest appear more in need of improving their defence than reinforcing an attack already containing Daryl Murphy and Jason Cummings, Mahi’s speed, versatility and cool finishing would make him an asset to Warburton’s squad.
