Sheffield United were handed a trophy for finishing second in the Championship earlier on Saturday after the Blades recorded a 4-1 win at Bramall Lane.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side beat Preston after mathematically securing promotion back to the Premier League with a 2-0 win over West Brom on Wednesday.
Sheffield United were awarded their silverware after today’s win, but Paul Merson was not happy about what he saw.
What’s the story?
Well, Merson does not believe Sheffield United deserve to be given a trophy for finishing second in the Championship.
Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, the 55-year-old said: “What’s the trophy for? I got in the final of the table tennis at Butlins and I didn’t get anything, I got beat in the final. Why should they get anything?
“How can you get a trophy for second? Give them a medal for second but not a trophy. A trophy is for the winner!
“Brilliant to go up, but come on. You don’t get a trophy for finishing second in the Olympics and that’s like the ultimate ultimate.”
Jeff Stelling reacted by calling Merson a “grinch” for his honest comments.
Sheffield United deserve credit
Trophy or not, Sheffield United deserve some form of recognition for their achievements this season.
Heckingbottom has overseen a fine job despite plenty of issues surrounding the club, including financial problems which have resulted in the Blades turning off their undersoil heating to save money and other cost saving exercises – as detailed by the Daily Mail.

Sheffield United have won 27 of their 44 Championship outings this season, which is a fantastic effort, and they look set to make a real impact back in the top-flight with talents such as Iliman Ndiaye shining through.
Regardless of Merson’s comments, the Blades can be proud of their runners-up trophy.
