Rangers are reportedly pushing to bring Greg Stewart to Ibrox.

Rangers vies with Oliver manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Ladbrokes Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 31, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers will be in the market for reinforcements this summer as Steven Gerrard attempts to take the club forward, and one signing appears to be moving closer.

The Gers need to chase down Celtic, and Gerrard will now have his third transfer window as Rangers boss in his sights, with a deal allegedly imminent.

The Glasgow Evening Times report that Rangers are poised to bring in forward Greg Stewart on a free transfer, landing the Birmingham City man when his contract expires this summer.

A boyhood Rangers fan, Stewart will relish a move. However, his arrival may be met with confusion given that he has struggled with Aberdeen since January, after starring with Kilmarnock in the first half of the season.

The 29-year-old’s role wouldn’t even be clear. He’s predominantly operated as a winger or as a striker, but there is plenty of competition at Ibrox in those roles already, meaning Gerrard could look to switch Stewart’s role.

Rangers have lacked creativity in midfield under Gerrard, often playing a workmanlike trio which has sometimes been devoid of the ability to generate quality chances and unlock deep block defences.

Stewart has quality on the ball, and by playing him in a deeper role, he could get on the ball with more regularity, pushing forward to support Alfredo Morelos or Jermain Defoe in the Rangers attack.

Stewart has history as a number 10, but playing in a midfield three with the license to get forward may help solve some of Rangers’ creativity woes, finding a bargain way to provide more ammunition in the final third.
