Greg Rusedski, the former US Open finalist, believes Alexandra Eala still has several key areas of her game that need attention.

Eala made headlines with her run to the Miami Open semifinals last year and has been moving up the rankings steadily ever since.

But while there have been plenty of positives, she’s also taken a few heavy defeats in recent weeks, including on her return to the Miami Open.

Rusedski said it was clear what area needed fixing after watching Eala get outclassed by Karolina Muchova in Miami.

Speaking on his podcast, Off-Court with Greg Rusedski, the former British number one said Eala is too talented not to reach the top 10, but she’ll need to make some adjustments.

Rusedski believes that building strength in the gym will help Eala address what he sees as a key area for improvement: her serve.

“She needs to improve the serve, the serve gets you on the front foot from the start,” said Rusedski. “She is going to get physically stronger. She has got to get more time in the gym, build up the muscles, get a little bit quicker. She will start hitting the ball harder.

“She is still young. Let’s not forget that, she is still young and has many more years to develop. I think she is too good a player not to make it into the top 10.

“The good thing is she has a good attitude, she is working hard, but you don’t want to create this scar tissue when you are playing the top girls and you are losing so easily at times and I think she will get over that hump. She is too good and she is putting in the effort.”

Eala also has fewer wins than losses this season with a win rate of just 62.2%. That places her 102nd out of all players who have taken part in WTA Tour matches during 2026.

How Alexandra Eala’s ranking will be affected after the Miami Open

Eala entered this year’s Miami Open ranked 29th in the world, but she was unable to defend all 390 points she earned from last season’s semi-final run.

After falling in the fourth round, she will drop 270 points and is expected to fall outside the top 40.

Although not ideal, Eala can take some comfort from being 17th in this year’s race to the WTA Finals – a ranking that tracks only points earned in 2026.

The clay court season could offer her a good chance to regain ground. She picked up just 70 points on clay last year, so there’s plenty of room for improvement.

Eala is set to start her clay campaign at the WTA 500 event in Linz, which kicks off on April 5.
