Rangers have allowed Greg Docherty to leave Ibrox on loan.

Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has told The Scottish Sun that he wants to come back to the club as a better player – much like Callum McGregor has for Celtic.

The Gers have undergone a major renovation this summer, as new boss Steven Gerrard has been backed with 12 new signings, and Osijek winger Eros Grezda is set to make it 13.

Yet having brought in so many new signings, Rangers had to let some players go, and Greg Docherty was one player who had to pursue playing time away from Ibrox.

The midfielder only joined Rangers from Hamilton Academical in January, completing a dream move to Ibrox having grown up supporting the club.

Early on, Docherty impressed under Graeme Murty in the Rangers midfield, continuing the form which saw him become a wanted man during his time with Hamilton.

The 21-year-old fell out of favour quickly under Gerrard though, and has now decided to go out on loan, heading to Shrewsbury Town for the season in order to continue his development elsewhere.

Docherty has now discussed his move to the League One side, and has told The Scottish Sun that he researched players who had gone out on loan before, and noted that he wants to return to Rangers as a better player, just as Callum McGregor did at Celtic when he returned from a loan with Notts County.

McGregor is now an integral Celtic star and a Scotland international, leaving Docherty to look to him for inspiration – even if some Gers fans may not be keen on him looking up to a Bhoys ace given the rivalry between the clubs.

“I didn’t play in the Europa League at the start of this season and it was killing me mentally. The manager knew that. He knew, at 21, I need to play,” said Docherty. “The manager gets it and knows coming in to training and just being there wouldn’t be good for me. He encouraged me to go and get the games I need. I will go back to Rangers next season and I will still only be 22.”

“When the chance of a loan came about I did a lot of research about players who went on loan and how it benefitted them. I looked at Callum McGregor. He is now a starter for Scotland and Celtic. David Beckham went on loan when he was a youngster at Man United. It’s all part of learning and I know I still have so much to learn. Jack Grealish is a big name down there and Callum is a big name up here. I have to hope this loan can benefit me as much as it did them,” he added.
