Lassana Coulibaly is finally set to join up with the Rangers squad

Greg Docherty of Rangers reacts at full time during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty was left on the substitutes bench for Steven Gerrard’s first two matches, as the Light Blues earned a 2-0 aggregate win over FK Shkupi – and he must make a decision on his future.

Docherty, 21, only joined Rangers in the January transfer window, after impressing at Scottish Premiership side Hamilton enough to convince former manager Graeme Murty.

He made 14 appearances for the Gers during the second half of the season but now under Gerrard, Docherty has fallen down the pecking order despite the former Liverpool man offloading Jason Holt.

It seems as though Gerrard will be playing a 4-3-3 system, starting his first match with Ross McCrorie, Scott Arfield and Daniel Candeias in central midfield. Ovie Ejaria, Andy Halliday, Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans are also on the books.

With the Gers latest signing, playmaker Lassana Coulibaly now available for selection after failing to be registered in time for Rangers two-legged clash against Shkupi, Docherty may find himself struggling to make the 18-man squad.

Docherty must weigh up if he has any chance of breaking into the Gers side under Gerrard before the end of the transfer window, as he is now at the key age of development.

Lassana Coulibaly of Mali is challenged by Ryota Morioka of Japan during the International friendly match between Japan and Mali at the Stade de Sclessin on March 23, 2018 in Liege Belgium.

A boyhood Rangers fan, Docherty will be desperate to break into Gerrard’s starting line-up but he may find that the only way to do that is by leaving the club on loan and proving to the Gers boss that he is worthy of a starting place.

He will find that difficult to find at Rangers, and a move on loan to a mid-table Scottish Premiership side or indeed an English Champonship outfit would be perfect for the Scotland youth international.
