Glasgow Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty made his first start for the Ibrox side in their Scottish Cup victory.

Greg Docherty took to Twitter in the wake of Rangers’ 6-1 Scottish Cup win over Ayr and labelled his first start for the Gers as the proudest day of his career to date.

Docherty was one of a number of players to arrive through the door at Ibrox during the January transfer window. The 21-year-old had been excellent with Hamilton Academical for the first-half of the campaign, and it seemed to be considered something of a coup amongst the Rangers fans that they had managed to bring him in.

Rangers imanager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The midfielder went into the trip to Ayr having previously made three substitute appearances for Graeme Murty’s side. But his wait for a start for the Light Blues ended on Sunday as he was paired alongside Sean Goss in the middle of the park.

And while Rangers were given a scare by the League One outfit, they scored six times to book their place in the next round in emphatic fashion – they will face Falkirk for a semi-final spot.

Docherty put in an encouraging performance in difficult conditions, providing a lot of control as Goss looked to show endeavour and spray the passes all around the park.

And after the game, the youngster took to social media to comment on the result and the fact that he has now made his first start for his boyhood club.

With the quality that Rangers currently boast in central midfield right now, Docherty perhaps would have felt that he would need to put in a strong display if he hoped to keep his place for the trip to his old side next weekend. And while it is difficult to take much from a cup game against lower league opposition in tricky conditions, the signs certainly suggest that he is going to prove to be an excellent signing for the Gers.
